Chandrashekhar - Close Friend of Music Director Shankar

The veteran actor Chandrashekhar, a very close friend of music director Shankar (Shankar-Jaikishan) recently celebrated his 87th birthday. How many of us know about the movie ‘Street Singer’ (1966) produced by him!? The theme of this bollywood movie was similar to that on which the Oscar winning ‘Slumdog Millionnaire’ has been made in hollywood. When ‘Street Singer’ was released, Anand Bazar patrika of Kolkata had regarded it as ‘poem on celluloid’. Dr.Zakir Hussain had organized special screening of the movie in Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Inspite of all these achievements, Chandrashekhar is a very low profile, modest person. Apart from being actor, producer, writer, director in hindi film industry, he is the lone survivor among the founders of Artists’ Association in hindi film industry in 1940s-1950s! When he once said to Abhinay-samraat Dilip Kumar ‘There can’t be any comparison between us’, Dilip Kumar said ‘You have devoted so many formative years of your career for establishing trade union for us. If I got fame for acting, you are no less as you accomplished the objective of welfare of our entire fraternity.’ A very warm person with excellent command over urdu (great shayars and bollywood lyricists like Sahir Ludhianvi, Hasrat Jaipuri and many more used to be regular attendees of mehfils at his residence), Chandrashekhar can also recall Sanskrit shlokas fit for the occasion during conversation.

He is one to the contributors in popularizing western dance as a producer of the movie ‘Cha Cha Cha’ in 1959. In the movie, he gave chance to dancer Helen as the lead actress and acted opposite her.

Over to the excerpts of chat during which Chandrashekhar distinctly recollected the facts belonging even to the 1940s era.....



Shankar-Jaikishan related edited part of my & my friends’ exclusive chat with Chandrashekhar - Veteran Actor-Producer-Director of Bollywood at his Andheri residence on 14 August 2009.

English Translation

How Chandrashekhar met Shankar for the first time in Mumbai.....
CS: What happened, ‘all of a sudden’ I was standing on Dadar station for a train. One person jumped down from a compartment & exclaimed - ‘oh Shekharji – you, here!’ I said, ‘oh yaar, I, err…’. (Shankar) (clapped loudly) ‘Come! I’ll take you to Prithvi Theatre! ‘Now you know - in that era, nobody wanted to go to theatre. So I just turned him away, saying I was going to so & so place.’ So we met like this! After that we used to keep on meeting. Whenever we used to meet…... he (Shankar) used to respect me a lot, love me a lot. Many a time ladies used to come for singing/ auditions. (Shankar used to say to them), ‘You perform some dance with Shekharji, after that I will listen to you.’ ‘He used to sit on piano, start playing and used to say, “show your dancing skills a bit.” (Then he used to say to me) ‘Got done! Do you know now (what I am)!’
My friend: So you were a good dancer!
CS – Yes, I was.

Initial meetings with Shankar-Jaikishan.....
CS – These people (SJ) used to work in Prithvi theatre. To they used to play their instruments. These people used to sit wearing makeup.
My friend – When Jaikishan joined RK camp, he was 17 years old. So at such small age, how he….?
CS – He used to work in some factory. Probably Shankarji brought him (to Prithvi Theatre).
My friend – No but at such a young age how he got established?
CS – He too (Shankar) made big name. He was also not very literate but understood Urdu shaayari very well. In Hyderabad, we used to learn Persian Urdu!


Regular contact with Shankar.....
Me: Did you have regular contact with Shankarji?
CS – Yes. We used to talk very frequently. They (S-J) had office in Famous (studio), as also the office of our Artista’ Association. We used to meet very frequently. We used to talk over telephone every other day.
Me: I mean, even during the 80s decade?
CS : Even during the days just before he died. It was known later that he had died.
My friend: Film industry did not come to know!?
CS – Yes, initially even Raj Kapoor (too) did not come to know!
My friend: So you maintained contact with Shankarji!
CS – Till the end. It was not known how he died. Nobody knew about it.
My friend: Now-a-days film industry doesn’t talk much about their (S-J’s) music.
CS – See everybody is good in his field. Naushad was not weak, C.Ramchandra was not weak, …. and S.D.Burman saheb was not weak, Khemchand Prakash was not bad either. Everybody has done his job during his ‘time’. The only thing is that they (SJ) moved forward with their style and were very popular for many-many years. Every film of theirs used to run, every song used to be popular.

Following conversation was done immediately after lengthy discussion on his film ‘Street Singer’. Confusion crept in! Had I not persisted with my questions, confusion would have been there & we would have concluded that Shankarji had composed one song for Cha-Cha-Cha).

Me: But people say that Shankarji had made the tune of ‘subah na aayi, shaam na aayi..’
Chandrashekhar: Yes, he only had made it. The music was his (Shankar’s).
Me: Shankarji!?
Chandrashekhar: Shankarji’s.
Me: For all the songs?
Chandrashekhar: For all the songs. They were Hasrat Jaipuri’s songs.
Me: Then why Iqbal Qureshi sahab is credited as the music director?
Chandrashekhar: Iqbal Qureshi was in that - ‘Cha-Cha-Cha’. He (Shankar) was in ‘Street Singer’.
Me: Yes! But for ‘Cha-Cha-Cha’ also people say that Shankarji composed one song!
Chandrashekhar: No-no! Absolutely not!
Me: So that is a false statement by the people.
My friend: It must have been similar!
Chandrashekhar: It absolutely did not resemble anything!


बॉलीवुड के वरिष्ठ कलाकार चंद्रशेखर: शंकर-जयकिशन के बारे में
गुज़रे ज़माने के मशहूर अभिनेता चन्द्रशेखर, जो संगीतकार शंकर (शंकर-जयकिशन) के बेहद क़रीबी दोस्त थे, ने हाल ही में अपना 87वां जन्मदिवस मनाया. हममें से कितनों को ‘स्ट्रीट सिंगर’ फिल्म (1966) के बारे में मालूम है, जिसके वे निर्माता हैं!? हॉलीवुड की हाल ही की ऑस्कर पुरस्कार विजेता फिल्म ‘स्लमडॉग मिलियनेयर’ का कथानक बॉलीवुड की इस फिल्म के कथानक जैसा ही है. जब ‘स्ट्रीट सिंगर’ रिलीज़ हुई थी, तब कलकत्ता (कोलकाता) के समाचारपत्र ‘आनन्द बाज़ार पत्रिका’ ने इसके बारे में लिखा था ‘सेल्युलॉइड पर कविता’. डॉ.ज़ाकिर हुसैन ने राष्ट्रपति भवन में इस फिल्म का विशेष प्रदर्शन करवाया था.

इन सब उपलब्धियों के बावज़ूद चन्द्रशेखर बेहद ‘लो-प्रोफाइल’, विनम्र व्यक्ति हैं. हिन्दी फिल्म उद्योग में अभिनेता, निर्माता, लेखक, निर्देशक होने के अलावा, वे 1940-50 के दशकों के दौरान लम्बी जद्दोज़ेहद के बाद स्थापित हिन्दी फिल्म उद्योग के आर्टिस्ट्स असोसिएशन के संस्थापकों में से एकमात्र वे ही आज हमारे बीच हैं. जब एक बार उन्होंने अभिनय-सम्राट दिलीप कुमार से कहा था ‘आपके और मेरे बीच कोई तुलना ही नहीं हो सकती है’ तो दिलीप कुमार ने कहा था, ‘आपने अपने करिअर निर्माण के महत्वपूर्ण वर्षों को हम लोगों के लिए ट्रेड यूनियन बनाने में लगा दिया. यदि मुझे अभिनय से नाम मिला है, तो आप भी कोई कमतर नहीं हैं क्योंकि आपने सम्पूर्ण फिल्म उद्योग की बेहतरी का अपना लक्ष्य हासिल किया है.’ बेहद मिलनसार तथा उर्दू के बेहतरीन ज्ञाता चन्द्रशेखर (उनके घर जमने वाली महफिलों में साहिर लुधियानवी, हसरत जयपुरी जैसे कई शायर नियमित रूप से आते थे) बातचीत के दौरान संस्कृत के सटीक श्लोक भी उद्धृत करते हैं.

पश्चिमी नृत्य को हिन्दी फिल्मों में लोकप्रिय बनाने में उनके द्वारा निर्मित फिल्म ‘चा चा चा’ का भी योगदान है. इस फिल्म में उन्होंने हेलन को मुख्य भूमिका सौंपी थी तथा स्वयं मुख्य अभिनेता थे.

मेरा सौभाग्य था कि मुझे 14 अगस्त 2009 की शाम को उनके अन्धेरी स्थित निवास पर लम्बी बातचीत का सुअवसर प्राप्त हुआ- Blog Editor - Latest on Bollywood, जनाब कमाल मुस्तफा के सौजन्य से, साथ में Yahoo! Forum on Shankar-Jaikishan के सदस्य, दोहा-कतार निवासी श्री के.एस.प्रकाश भी थे.

चलिए, उस बातचीत के कुछ अंश देखें जिसमें चन्द्रशेखर ने 1940 के युग तक की यादें हमारे साथ बांटी.....

जब वे शंकर से बंबई (मुम्बई) में पहली बार मिले.....
चंद्रशेखर: क्या हुआ, 'all of a sudden' मैं दादर स्टेशन पर ट्रेन के लिए खड़ा हुआ था. एक आदमी कूदा ट्रेन के कूपे से - 'अरे शेखरजी आप!' 'मैंने कहा यार मैं....' (शंकर) (जोर से ताली ठोकते हुए) -"आइए यहाँ पृथ्वी थिएटर है मैं आपको वहां ले जाता हूँ.' 'अब थिएटर कोई जाना नहीं चाहता था उस ज़माने में - आप तो जानते हो.' (मैंने कहा) 'अरे मैं... अरे मैं इधर जा रहा हूँ, कहके मैंने टाल दिया.' ऐसे मिले! फिर उसके बाद मिलते रहे. जब भी मिलते थे, बहुत..... वो मेरी बहुत इज्ज़त, बहुत प्यार करते थे. कई दफा तो लड़कियां-वडकीयां आती थी गाने-वाने के लिए. (शंकरजी बोलते थे) 'ऐसा करो, शेखर साहब के साथ डांस करो फिर मैं तुम्हें सुनूंगा.' 'पियानो पे बैठ जाते थे वो, अपना बजाते थे (और बोलते थे) 'ज़रा (डांस) करके बताओ ना.... हो गयी ना! पता चला ना!'
मेरे मित्र: अच्छे डांसर थे आप!?
चंद्रशेखर: हाँ! वो तो मैं था.


शंकर-जयकिशन के साथ शुरुआती मुलाकातें.....
चंद्रशेखर: पृथ्वी थियेटर में काम करते थे ये लोग. तो अपना ये बाजे-वाजे का ये लोग करते रहते थे. ये लोग मेकअप- वेकअप करके बैठे रहते थे.
मेरे मित्र: जब जयकिशन ने आरके कैम्प जोइन किया, वो १७ साल के थे. तो इतनी कम उम्र में कैसे उन्होंने.....?
चंद्रशेखर: वो किसी फैक्ट्री-वैक्ट्री में काम करते थे. शायद शंकरजी उनको ले आए थे.
मेरे मित्र: नहीं लेकिन इतने कम समय में वो कैसे बन गए?
चंद्रशेखर: ये भी (शंकर) तो बन गए ना! ये पढ़े लिखे नहीं थे लेकिन उर्दू शायरी बहुत समझते थे. हैदराबाद में तो हम लोग पर्शियन उर्दू पढ़ते थे.


शंकर से नियमित संपर्क.....
मैं: क्या आप शंकरजी से 'रेगुलर कोंटैक्ट' में थे?
चंद्रशेखर: हाँ! बहुत मुलाक़ात होती थी. फेमस (स्टूडियो) उनका ऑफिस था, फेमस में हमारा आर्टिस्ट असोसिएशन वगैरह थे. बहुत मिलते थे! हर दूसरे-तीसरे दिन फोन पर बात होती थी.
मैं : मेरा मतलब है ८० के दशक में भी?
चंद्रशेखर: उनकी डेथ होने के कुछ दिनों पहले तक. बाद में पता चला था की उनकी डेथ हो गयी.
मेरे मित्र: फिल्म इंडस्ट्री को पता नहीं चला?
चंद्रशेखर: हाँ! शुरू में राजकपूर को भी पता नहीं चला!
मेरे मित्र: तो आपने शंकरजी से संपर्क बनाए रखा!
चंद्रशेखर: आख़री तक! वो तो पता नहीं चला कैसे डेथ हो गयी उनकी. किसी को भी नहीं पता चला.
मेरे मित्र: फिल्म इंडस्ट्री आजकल ज़्यादा ये नहीं करता साहब! - उनके म्यूजिक-व्यूजिक.....
चंद्रशेखर : नहीं देखिए साहब! हर आदमी अपने फील्ड में अच्छा होता है. नौशाद कोई कमज़ोर नहीं थे, सी.रामचंद्र कोई कमज़ोर नहीं थे,........ और एस.डी.बर्मन साहब कोई कमज़ोर नहीं थे, खेमचंद प्रकाश बुरे नहीं थे. हर आदमी ने अपने-अपने टाइम पे अपना-अपना काम किया है. ऐसी बात नहीं है! सिर्फ उन्होंने (शंकर-जयकिशन) अपनी एक स्टाइल ले के चले थे और बहुत दिनों तक चले थे. हर फिल्म चलती थी उनकी, हर गाना चलता था.

नीचे दी गई बातचीत उनकी फिल्म ‘स्ट्रीट सिंगर’ पर लम्बी बातचीत के बाद की गई थी. भ्रम की स्थिति पैदा हो गई थी! यदि मैं बार-बार अपना प्रश्न नहीं दोहराता, तो भ्रम बना रहता तथा हम यह निष्कर्ष निकाल लेते कि शंकरजी ने ‘चा-चा-चा’ के लिए एक गाना कम्पोज़ किया था.

मैं: पर लोग बोलते हैं, शंकरजी ने धुन बनाई थी इसकी – ‘सुबह न आई, शाम न आई’ की.
चन्द्रशेखर: यस, उन्होंने ही बनाई. म्यूज़िक उन्हीं का था.
मैं: शंकरजी!?
चन्द्रशेखर: शंकरजी का.
मैं: सब गानों में?
चन्द्रशेखर: पूरे गानों में. हसरत जयपुरी के गाने थे.
मैं: तो इक़बाल क़ुरैशीजी का नाम कैसे लिया जाता है?
चन्द्रशेखर: इक़बाल क़ुरैशी उसमें थे – ‘चा-चा-चा’ में. ये (शंकर) ‘स्ट्रीट सिंगर’ में थे.
मैं: हां! पर ‘चा-चा-चा’ में भी लोग बोलते हैं, एक गाना शंकरजी ने ‘कम्पोज़’ किया था.
चन्द्रशेखर: नहीं-नहीं! बिल्कुल नहीं!
मैं: वो ग़लत बोलते हैं लोग?
मेरा मित्र: वो मिलता-जुलता होगा.
चन्द्रशेखर: बिल्कुल मिलता-जुलता नहीं था.
